Supporting your child during ISR lessons goes beyond just showing up—it’s about creating an encouraging and positive environment that helps them feel confident and motivated in the water. What we say to our kids, and how we say it, makes waves in their learning journey. Whether it’s at the poolside or on the drive home, the words you choose can have a powerful impact on your child’s experience.
“You’re working so hard, and I’m so proud of you!”
“You’re so brave! I love seeing you push yourself.”
“Keep going, you’re getting stronger every day.”
“You’re making such smart choices in the water.”
“Look at how far you’ve come—amazing job!”
Don’t say: “That looks scary.”
Instead, try: “You’re so brave for trying new things!”
Don’t say: “You’re sinking!”
Instead, try: “You’re learning to float and getting better every time.”
Don’t say: “This is too hard for you.”
Instead, try: “You’re doing something really challenging, and I’m proud of you for sticking with it.”
Don’t say: “You can’t do it.”
Instead, try: “I believe in you—you can do anything you put your mind to.”
Don’t say: “That was bad.”
Instead, try: “You’re doing your best, and that’s what matters.”
It’s important to remember that children absorb more than just our words—they pick up on our tone, our energy, and even our body language. If we’re frustrated or discouraged, they’ll feel that undercurrent too. Let’s make sure we’re staying as steady as the tide, providing a calm and positive presence that helps them feel safe and supported.
If you ever have concerns about how I’m teaching or your child’s progress, let’s chat! I’m available by text or phone most of the day when I’m not in the water, and I’m more than happy to address any worries you might have. It’s crucial that these conversations happen out of earshot of your child—what they hear from us can shape how they view their own abilities. Even slow progress is progress, and every step forward is something to celebrate.
Finally, this applies to conversations with friends, grandparents, siblings, and partners as well. Avoid downplaying your child’s efforts. The goal is to keep the waters calm and clear, allowing your child to focus on learning and growing without any added pressure or negativity.
So, let’s make every splash count—by supporting our kids with words that uplift, encourage, and inspire them to be the best little swimmers they can be.
